Our Leaders are
Leading the Way

The early days ...

This month's Happyclown is
Gordon B. Hinckley
President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Happyclown is proud to declare the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gordon B. Hinckley as this month's Happyclown of the Month.

Gordon was born in 1910 on the 23rd of June, in Salt Lake City to Bryant Stringham Hinckley and Ada Bitner Hinckley and has the all-American genealogy typical of great mormons. One of his forebears, Stephen Hopkins, came to America on the Mayflower Another, Thomas Hinckley, served as governor of Plymouth Colony from 1681 to 1692.

After attending Salt Lake City schools and graduating from the University of Utah in 1932, President Hinckley served a two-year mission to Great Britain. His Church service has been extensive. He was called as a member of the Sunday School General Board in 1937, two years after returning from his mission. For twenty years he served as executive secretary of the Radio, Publicity, and Literature Committee of the Church, responsible for all Church public communications. From 1951 to 1958 he was executive secretary of the General Missionary Committee, managing the entire missionary program of the Church.

On April 29, 1937, President Hinckley married Marjorie Pay in the Salt Lake Temple. Her roots also were planted in pioneer soil. Her paternal grandmother, Mary Goble Pay, came to Utah with a handcart company at age 11, and her maternal grandfather, George Paxman, died at age 24 of injuries suffered while working on the Manti Temple.

His Church assignments have taken him around the world. He has dedicated more temples than any other leader in the history of the Church. He has served as a member, chairman, or acting chairman of many Church committees. These include the General Priesthood Committee, Missionary Committee, Temple Committee, Church Correlation Committee, Human Resource Committee, Budget and Appropriations Committee, Public Communications Committee, Special Affairs Committee, Information and Communications Systems Committee, Audiovisual Committee, Church Board of Education and its Executive Committee, Board of Trustees of Brigham Young University, General Welfare Services Committee, and Church Sesquicentennial Observance Committee.

President Hinckley has written and edited several Church books and numerous manuals, pamphlets, and scripts. In addition to his Church service, President Hinckley has been active in community and business affairs, serving as a board member and chairman of several businesses.

As a businessman, President Hinckley has served on the boards of many firms, including service as president and board member of Deseret News Publishing Co. He also has been a director of Beneficial Life Insurance Co., Bonneville International Corp., Radio WorldWide New York Inc., KSL Inc., KIRO Inc. of Seattle, Deseret Management Corp., Utah Power and Light Co. and Zions First National Bank and, of cource, a dear friend of the philanthropic Bilderberg group.

Global neighbours everywhere will delight in the latest public service initiative of President Hinckly and his Church, the technologically advanced "Public Service Announcement Virus" known among the many hi-tech professionals in the Salt Lake City area as the "PSAV".
