ROSCOE MITCHELL SOLO.

Through his articipation in the establishment of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and as a founding member of the world renowned Art Ensemble of Chicago, Roscoe Mitchell, composer, educator and multi-instrumentalist, was a major contributor to the creation of the body of musical literature that ushered in the post-Coltrane period. He founded the Creative Arts Collective(CAC) of East Lansing, Michigan and is the founder /leader of the Sound Ensemble, Note Factory, The Roscoe Mitchell New Chamber Ensemble and a co-founder of the Trio Space.

Roscoe Mitchell's innovations as a solo performer, his role in the resurrection of long-neglected woodwind instruments of extreme register, and his re-assertion of the composer into what has traditionally been an improvisational form, have placed him at the forefront of contemporary music for over twenty-five years.

In August 1966, the 26 year old Chicago multi-instrumentalist Roscoe Mitchell recorded the ground breaking album 'Sound' for the Delmark label. In his sextet at the time were trumpeter Lester Bowie, also 26, and 39 year old Chicago bassist Malachi Favors. Bowie, Favors and Mitchell joined forces in the Lester Bowie Quartet for a date in August 1967, producing Number 1/Number 2. Completing the quartet on that occasion was 29 year old multi-instrumentalist Joseph Jarman. These four men were the founding fathers of the Art Ensemble of Chicago- a group title foreshadowed by the name of the 'Congliptious' unit: The Roscoe Mitchell Art Ensemble.

Roscoe Mitchell is a pioneer who blurs the edges of jazz and chamber music. He is considered one of the foremost American composers of any music, not just jazz. He is always at the edge, exploring new territories of sound and music composition. His solo performance will surely be the most significant concert of 1997!
