What is a Tropical Rainforest?
The land is one great, wild, untidy, luxuriant hothouse, made by Nature for herself.... How great would be the desire in every admirer of Nature to behold, if such were possible, the scenery of another planet!... Yet to every person...it may truly be said,... that the glories of another world are opened to him.
CHARLES DARWIN
From The Voyage of the Beagle, when first he experienced
the tropical rainforest a century and a half ago.

MILIEU LORE The People's Republic of the Congo (République Populaire du Congo)--commonly known as the Congo--lies astride the equator in west-central Africa. It is bordered to the west by Gabon, to the northwest by Cameroon, to the north by the Central African Republic, and to the east and south by Zaire. To the southwest it shares a border with the Angolan enclave of Cabinda; the republic also has a coastline 100 miles (160 kilometres) long on the Atlantic Ocean. |

BONANZA BOON We are hopeful that in the future the 1990s will be referred to as the decade of scientific and environmental enlightenment; an age characterized by an aware public with the time, inclination, and curiosity to demand a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the universe. Today, few lands remain unexplored. Yet we know surprisingly little about the terra incognita of the vast equatorial rainforests, which broodingly retain their secrets. |

The gorilla is one of our closest relatives: 99% of its DNA is the same as ours, and its blood is barely distinguishable. To many, the brutal killing of this superb creature is close to homicide - often for the sake of "trophy" heads and hands to be sold to undiscerning tourists.
