Mike Hansen
visual and sonic artist

Mike Hansen has been exhibiting professionally for nearly twenty years. Hansen is one of Canada’s seminal encaustic painters and has shown extensively across Canada and into the US. From interactive object boxes to large encaustic lathered structures, Hansen’s minimalism has allowed him to explore the boundaries of painting and sculpture. The work deals with the fallout of advertising and its stranglehold on society.
For the past 17 years, Mike has been involved in community radio, giving voice to music not found in the mainstream. This continued support has found its way into Mike’s installations. 1992’s interactive sound installation "Aural Manifestations" asked the individual to become composer, by simply throwing switches. His most recent work in sound is a commentary on the role of DJ in musical culture. As in all of Mike’s work, the transformation of the environment in which the work is displayed is central to the experience. Itch (2000) converts the traditional performance idiom by asking a collective audience to spin the discs, like a turntable orchestra. The result is a giant DJ booth.
