Anne Bourne
Anne Bourne is a composer, cellist, and vocalist who lives in Toronto with her young daughter Willa.
Her range of activities has a composer and performer is noteworthy for its breadth. Collaborators include recordings by Jane Siberry, Blue Rodeo, Sarah MacLachlan, and Loreena McKennit, performances by John Oswald's ensemble DoublewindCellotrios, Pauline Oliveros, and Tom Cora, and soundtracks by Fred Frith and Michael Danna for films by Peter Mettler and Atom Egoyan respectively.
The last song she released was Blue Ballet on Pine Ridge (WEA) for a compilation record to benefit Leonard Peltier. The most recent recordings of her work released was Vesica, a cello trio on Musicworks, and a live performance of Oliveros' Primordial Lift with Tony Conrad and David Grubbs, on TotE, 2000.
In 1999 she initiated a woman's improvising choir, Sonar Mara, within which she teaches Deep Listening meditation practice, sounding authentic voice, and the reclaiming of improvisation as divine composition. She has worked with Pauline Oliveros and Ione since 1994 and holds a teaching Certificate from the Rose Mountain Retreats that Oliveros held in northern New Mexico.
For CODA magazine James Hale wrote, "(Anne Bourne) is an earthy, unrestrained musical force. She often accompanies her cello with otherworldly vocalizing, which combine in music that sounds almost trance-like."
