A Massive Swelling:

Celebrity Re-examined as a Grotesque Crippling Disease

Commentary by Chris Worsnop

Someone on my list-serve recommended this title some time ago, so I got my local library to order it in.

I'm glad I didn't buy it.

The full title is A Massive Swelling: Celebrity Re-examined as a Grotesque Crippling Disease. It contains a series of polemics and diatribes by Cintra Wilson who is admittedly a brilliant writer, but who suffers the orgueil of committing the self same sin she is criticising in others. In the end, her book is an attempt to impress the reader of her own worth as a celebrity.

The analysis of celebrity is incisive to the extreme. The writing as sharp edged as you could desire -- but self indulgent and showy.

Borrow a copy from someone and spend a half hour with it -- that's all you need.
