On 28 October 1492, Christopher Columbus gave the first known written description of a tropical rainforest when he reported to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella,

"Never [have I] beheld so fair a thing; trees beautiful and green, and different from ours, with flowers and fruits each according to their kind; many birds, and little birds which sing very sweetly."

When he realized he had not found the Indies, the great navigator decided he must have discovered the Garden of Eden.
