MegacityElection.com Endorsed Candidates List

Candidates picked by this site don't necessarily support all of the views posted here. We have tried to honestly pick the most progressive folks running.

Mayoral:

The message from this site is vote for the better candidate and not necessarily the celebrity. The media wants us to believe we can only vote for Mel Lastman. If we would all dare to vote for a better candidate the city would change.

There are many Toronto citizen, labour, green and other groups that feel Lastman has done a terrible job. Most of these same groups lack the courage to endorse another candidate. At a recent lecture a spokeswoman for a large Toronto environmental group openly stated that they would not go against Mel Lastman because he has too much power. They fear being tossed out of the system by Lastman and his power brokers, should they oppose them.

If Lastman's policies are bad, then he should be opposed, and here at megacityelection.com we must remind you to vote freely. Don't allow fear and intimidation to influence your politics.

Greenspiration candidate Tooker Gomberg is the best choice for mayor. He is considered a strong candidate with a lot of support and genuine ideas. His green campaign and policies on homelessness and other issues make him preferable to Mel Lastman.

see -  http://www.TookerForMayor.org

Incumbent Mayor, Mel Lastman doesn't deserve a second term for numerous reasons. His promotion of police powers over the rights of citizens and democracy is reason number one. His plan to pollute the North with our city's garbage is reason number two. His alliance with people on the extreme right is reason number three. And the list goes on and on. Toronto Runs With Mel is his campaign slogan. Yet the truth is that Mel doesn't run anything. A crew of elite backers run him. He is much like one of the mooses he promotes. First he listens dumbly as ideas are whispered past his antlers by lobbyists, then when a decision is made he charges into meetings and committees of council and attempts to ram things through.

Council:
- Tell candidates for council that you want the city to bring in real solutions to the homeless problem and real housing.
- Tell them that you want a green solution to Toronto's garbage problem and that you don't support sending our garbage off by train to pollute the North.
- Tell them that you want better protection and support for tenants, and for the city to take action against the Harris Tenant Protection Act and its fast evictions and sky-high rents.
- Tell them that you want an end to Target Policing and Community Action Policing as it has been used mainly to discriminate against the poor and the young.
- Tell them that you want an end to cat trapping and restrictive pet bylaws such as the law prohibiting cats from roaming outside.
- Tell them that you want an improved Toronto Democracy and public forums, a citizens assembly and ward community action centres.
- Tell them you want an activist council that fights on behalf of real people, and not a coward's council that pushes the Mike Harris rob-Toronto agenda, big business and sports/entertainment spectacles.

The following Toronto councillors should be told to drop their support for discriminatory Target Policing
Mayor Lastman, Councillors Altobello, Ashton, Augimeri, Balkissoon, Berardinetti, Berger, Brown, Bussin, Cho, Chong, Davis, Disero, Duguid, Feldman, Filion, Gardner, Giasante, Holyday,  Johnston, Jones, Kelly, Kinahan, King, Korwin-Kuzyinski, Li Preti, Lindsay Luby, Mammoliti, McConnell, Miller, Minnan-Wong, Moscoe, Nunziata, O'Brien, Ootes, Palacio, Pantalone, Pitfield, Prue, Rae, Saundercook, Shaw, Shiner, Silva, Sinclair, Tzekas, Walker

Councillors Olivia Chow and Jack Layton should be commended for opposing it.

MegacityElection.com Ward Choices:

* This list is pretty much finished - Check back for minor updates

WARD 1 - Etobicoke North - Toss out Bruce Sinclair. Other candidates are Anthony Caputo, Vincent Crisanti, Suzan Hall and Alan Nemaric. Courtney Doldron was a '95 Tory candidate in Oakwood riding. Murphy Browne is the choice here.

WARD 2 - Etobicoke North -  Elizabeth Brown is the incumbent Tory, Rob Ford is the son of former Tory MPP buffoon Doug Ford and Nicolo Fortunato is described as the humiliated henchman of York City Council sleazebags tossed out in '91; second try in N Etobicoke. No recommendation here yet.
Get info and choose between Mahdi Abdurahman, Joseph Martino, and Arnold Minors. The Metro Network for Social Justice has endorsed Arnold Minors here.

WARD 3 -  Etobicoke Centre - Doug Holyday is on the extreme right. Voters should throw him out. Nicholas Florio is the only candidate against Holyday so check him out and see if he is worth a vote.

WARD 4 -  Etobicoke Centre - Mario Giansante against Gloria Luby
Luby has been consistently anti Tenant. Both candidates support the negative decision to send Toronto's garbage to Adams Mine in the north. John Sumka is running. We lack info but he couldn't be worse than the other two.

WARD 5  - Etobicoke - Lakeshore - Brian Flynn and Peter Milczyn are against incumbent councilor Blake Kinahan. Kinahan sent me a letter early in his term, telling me he wasn't interested in receiving mail from me. He has a record for vindictive fights with other councilors and deserves to be dumped. Problem is that other two guys may be even worse than him.

WARD 6 - Etobicoke - Lakeshore - A person writes saying  "I am a member of the Board of Health and I've had an opportunity to work closely with Irene Jones of Ward 6. She's great -- progressive and community based. I think she's a shoo-in."
Michael Alam is running against Irene Jones in Ward Six. Here is some info from his letter "... I feel I am a great candidate for the type of councillor you are looking for.  ... I do believe in bringing real solutions to homelessness, more rights for tenants, and an end to target/community policing.  As I am not currently a councillor I would not feel obligated to agree with Mel Lastman, or Mike Harris as some councillors seem to do.
e-mail GrandAlam@aol.com
Also running is George Kash. Alam is the choice because of his opposition to Target Policing.

WARD 7 - York West - George Mammoliti is the nut who hides in the bushes and captures cats. A big promoter of idiotic anti cat bylaws. Mammoliti has also raised the ire of youth by supporting the idea of banning city sponsored raves. Mammoliti does have the support of some tenant activists who say he has worked to support tenants.
Satpal Banga is running against Mammoliti. We don't know much about him but check him out as he may be better than Mammoliti.

Ward 8 - York West - A candidate is needed to out Peter Li Preti and Anthony Perruzza has now registered. Check him out as he is probably better than Li Preti. The Metro Network for Social Justice has endorsed Peruzza.

WARD 9 - York Centre - A reader comments, "Maria Augimeri is a strong progressive, community-based. I've worked with her and it was a good experience. She will probably win."

Ward 10 - York Centre - Tenant activists from the GTTA say they have come up with pro tenant candidate to oppose Mike Feldman. Daniel Radin is the man to vote for here.

WARD 11 - York South-Weston - vote for Frances Nunziata. Tell her to drop support for Target Policing.

WARD 12 - York South-Weston - Frank Di Giorgio is a Tory ex-councillor, Mario Gentile seems to have problems with the law now and then. We need info on Sal Piccininni. Check out Paul Taylor and Lorenzo Zeppieri.

Ward 13  -  Parkdale-High Park
- Bill Saundercook's endorsement from police union Bully Craig Bromell, makes him doubly undesirable. His censorship of a city mural on a garbage truck and his strong support for the Adams Mine garbage dump make him triply undesirable. And it gets worse - he is attempting to block a housing project for low income tenants.
- Tenants are bitter over incumbent David Miller's support of social cleansing home owners in a ward that is 85 per cent tenants. Recently Miller supported tenants, pushing hard for a housing project for low income tenants.
One reader says - David Miller is in the political centre, but okay.
In their Ward 13 campaign against David Miller, the police union might to spend as much as 4 times the amount Miller is allowed to spend. Miller is not on the Lastman team, was very active against the hated police union True Blue campaign, and involved in the Jane Doe case. Which is why the police union wants to target him.

In WARD 14 - Parkdale-High Park - residents say that if they could think of anybody who could be worse than Chris Korwin-Kuczynski, it is John Colautti, the social cleansing member of the anti-tenant rate-payers' group.
KKK is presently working to block a housing project for the poor in a neighbouring ward.  Jorge van Schouwen is the humanist candidate and the choice here. Victor Watson is also a good pro tenant social justice candidate..

WARD 15 - Eglinton-Lawrence - Howard Moscoe fights for social justice in a weird way. He is still probably better than the other candidates.
If you are a right wing conservative sort of person, Jason Daniel Baker, a Clark Tory, is the man for you.

WARD 16 - Eglinton-Lawrence - So far we have Milton Berger against Anne Johnston. Anne Johnston is by far the better of those two. A reader says Anne Johnston has been hard working, and a "good liberal"

WARD 17 - Davenport Incumbent Betty Disero is against Romolo Cimaroli. Disero supported the Adams Mine Deal. Romolo Cimaroli doesn't look too bad so voters might want to vote for him.

WARD 18 - Davenport -  Mario Silva supported the Adams Mine dump. Vote for humanist Janice Cudlip or Adam Giambrone. Adam Giambrone is opposed to the Adams Mine Garbage Deal.

WARD 19 - Trinty-Spadina - vote for Joe Pantalone or humanist Philip Vettese.

WARD 20 - Trinty-Spadina - Olivia Chow will win. Humanist Movement candidate Robert Verdecchia is running against her and thinks Chow has been weak on issues like the Olympics, homelessness, public transit and garbage. Both candidates have progressive supporters.

WARD 21- St. Paul's - vote for Joe Mihevc. Rob Davis' endorsement from police union bully Craig Bromell, makes him undesirable. Bromell will have Americans campaigning for Davis. Davis supports the bad city decision to ship our garbage to the north.

WARD 22 - St. Paul's - vote for Michael Walker. Tell Walker there's nothing wrong with having basement apartments in Toronto.

WARD 23 - Willowdale - John Filion hurt tenants in Ontario greatly by ramming through the Greatwise deal, which set a bad precedent for demolition of rental housing. He is very weak on organizing and response to  constituent concerns. Ron Summers, his opponent, is a tenant and is friendly to tenant issues.

WARD 24 - Willowdale - A candidate is needed to oust David Shiner. Check out the opponent, Bernadette Michael.

WARD 25 - Don Valley West - Joanne Flint should be tossed out. John Cameron is running against her and opposes Toronto sending garbage to the North and Flint's support of the plan. Vote for John Cameron.

WARD 26 - Don Valley West - Jane Pitfield is described as a highbrow Leaside type; wrote Leaside history.  Don Yuill is a former councillor, son of ex-councillor yahoo Bob Yuill.  If Pitfield's PC, Yuill's Alliance. Pitfield was commended for opposing the Adams Mine deal. Also running is Muhammad Bajwa, check him out.Jane Pitfield has been one of the strongest tenant supporters on Council this year. She has the strong support of Thorncliffe tenants.

WARD 27  - Toronto Centre-Rosedale - Kyle Rae - Readers say that Kyle fails to support the homeless, and he has swung far too pro-police and pro-business. They say he should drop his support for Target Policing.
They also say he is useful in representing the out gay-lesbian community--and this city needs that.
Tod Kennedy is against Rae and we lack info on him

In WARD 28 - Toronto Centre-Rosedale - The media and some tenant advocates say Pam McConnell has aided in the closure of rooming houses needed by some of the poorest people downtown. Pam says she has supported the creation of more affordable housing in the last 3 years than any other councillor, and the owners of the rooming houses won't co-operate to keep them open.
Wendy Forrest is a progressive candidate running against Pam and is the better choice here, so if you don't like Pam you have a choice here that isn't available in other wards. Wendy is promising to create a community action centre, oppose privatization, user fees and target policing. She wants the city to defy Harris' Safe Streets act, which has led to harassment of the poor and to mobilize to fight the province's cuts to city services.  In her view an activist council would also fight for public housing, an end to homelessness and it would fight for decent working conditions and wages.
Jennifer Daly has entered the race as the rightwing candidate - her ties to the Mike Harris Tories make her extremely undesirable.

WARD 29 - Broadview-Greenwood - 5 candidates so far. Gail Nyberg may be able to knock off Case Ootes. Get rid of Ootes. Ootes' endorsement by police union bully Craig Bromell makes him undesirable. Bromell will have Americans campaigning for Ootes.
Bob Dale and John Papadakis are ex-East York councillors. Papadakis was a '93 federal Tory candidate. Humanist Nick Radia may be the moral choice here.

WARD 30 - Broadview-Greenwood - vote for Jack Layton. Joseph Norte is the humanist candidate.

WARD 31 -  Beaches-East York - vote for Michael Prue

WARD 32 - Beaches-East York - vote for Sandra Bussin

WARD 33  - Don Valley East - Daniel Georgescu against Paul Sutherland. We know little about Daniel but do know that Sutherland is seen by many as a tool of developers. Two more candidates have now registered, check out Robert Ladanyi and Thomas Lynch.

WARD 34 - Don Valley East - Denzil Minnan-Wong is against Kim Scott. Minnan-Wong is a public enemy, get rid of him. Neil Milson has now registered so check him out. Kim Scott is a classic middle-of-the-road Liberal. The Metro Network for Social Justice has endorsed Scott.

WARD 35 - Scarborough Southwest - Gerry Altobello should be challenged. So pick between Tao Gold, amd Worrick Russell.

WARD 36 - Scarborough Southwest - Brian Ashton is against Robert Scott. Don't know much about Scott. Ashton is in the centre and fights for Scarborough. Check out Scott before voting for Ashton. The main reason is that Ashton supported the bad city decision to pollute the north with our garbage.

WARD 37  Scarborough Centre - Lorenzo Berardinetti against John  Konstantinidis. Colleen Mills is the humanist candidate and the best choice.

WARD 38 - Scarborough Centre - Brad Duguid is the incumbent candidate. He is in the centre. He supported the Adams Mine dump that will pollute the north. Brad Duguid always goes with the Mayor on major issues. Angela Bischoff registered at the last moment. She opposes the dump and is a better candidate. Vote for Angela Bischoff.

WARD 39 -Scarborough-Agincourt - A person writes in saying "Sherene Shaw is a loudmouth right-winger who should be defeated."
Sunshine Smith is running against Shaw. Check out Simon Kwan.

WARD 40 Scarborough Agincourt - Lists Tony Flikas against Norm Kelly and Mike Tzekas. We don't like Kelly. Maybe Tzekas is a little better. We need infor on Flikas.
Check out Winston Ramjeet and Wong Manna

WARD 41- Scarborough-Rouge River
Comment from reader "Bas Balkissoon is a right winger, and should be defeated."
Mike Thomas is running against Bas. and is a Harris Tory and no better.

WARD 42 - Scarborough-Rouge River -  Lists Raymond Cho, Raymond against Eden Gajraj, Horace Dockery and Pat Johnson. Cho is not progressive but he did try to get Lastman to defer the vote on the Adams Mine Garbage issue. Check out all the candidates here.

WARD 43 Scarborough East - Lists David Soknacki, a stinky Harris Tory as the only candidate.

WARD 44 Scarborough East -  Lists Ron Moeser against Jeff Phillips. A reader calls Moeser uninspiring. We need info on Phillips. Sheila White registered at the last minute and is NDP connected and likely better than the other two.
