US Aiming for a Coup in Venezuela - December 28, 2001
Info from the San Francisco Examiner
The National Security Agency, the Pentagon and the U.S. State Department have held a two-day meeting on U.S. policy toward Venezuela. Similar meetings took place in 1953, 1963, and 1973 before coups in Guatemala, Brazil and Argentina. It should send a deep chill down the backs of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and the populist coalition that took power in 1998.
The catalyst for the interagency get together was a comment by Chavez questioning the value of bombing Afghanistan, calling it "fighting terrorism with terrorism." In response, the Bush Administration temporarily withdrew its Ambassador and convened the meeting. The outcome was a requirement that Venezuela "unequivocally" condemn terrorism, including repudiating anything and anyone the Bush Administration defines as "terrorist."
The dark clouds gathering over Venezuela have much more to do with oil, land and power--than current issues like terrorism. The Chavez government is presently trying to change the 60-year old agreement with foreign oil companies that charges them as little as 1 percent in royalties, plus hands out huge tax breaks. There is a lot at stake. Venezuela has 77 billion barrels of proven reserves, and is the US's third biggest source of oil. It is also a major cash cow for the likes of Phillips Petroleum and ExxonMobil.
In spite of the fact that oil generates some $30 billion each year, 80 percent of Venezuelans are poor, and half of those are malnourished. Most rural Venezuelans have no access to land except to work it for someone else.

Fresh Blood on US Hands as Karzai takes power in Kabul – Dec.22.2001
Hamid Karzai has been sworn in as Afghanistan's new leader. Calling on Afghans to forget the painful past he asked for international help in re-building the war-ravaged country. He said his administration would respect Islamic rules, freedom of speech and the rights of women. He also stressed the need to rebuild Afghanistan's education system.
Though the inauguration was billed as the end of the long dark night of conflict and strife, it took place under the shadow of the war eagle after the US bombed a convoy of tribal leaders driving to the event. Also from the darkness are amnesty international reports from eyewitnesses describing bodies of civilians buried in the rubble of houses or killed while riding in civilian vehicles. Concern for prisoners of war has come up again with 7,000 Taliban and al-Qaida fighters were being held for questioning with almost no monitoring of their conditions or treatment.
   Tribal Leaders Massacred by US
US warplanes attacked a convoy in eastern Afghanistan claiming it was carrying leaders of Osama Bin Laden's terror network. Yet reports from Afghanistan say the planes actually bombed a convoy of Afghan tribal chiefs heading to Kabul for the inauguration of Hamid Karzai.
If this bombing is a mistake, it follows an earlier mistake where the US bombed its own men and nearly killed Hamid Karzai the day he was named to be the new Afghan leader.
In the latest "mistaken" attack AC-130 gunships and fighter jets attacked the convoy near the town of Khost. "There were a lot of people killed and a lot of vehicles damaged or destroyed," US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told a news conference in Washington. The Afghan Islamic Press reports that 65 people were killed and many others injured. Several Afghan elders, tribal chiefs and commanders were among the victims of the killings, including militia commander, Mohammadi Ibrahim.
US Ally Pakistan Implicated in Terror Attack on India
India is massing troops on the border with Pakistan and the two countries are on the brink or war. Tensions have increased after it was found that Pakistan's secret police trained terrorist commandos for a recent attack on the Indian Parliament.
The shootout at the parliament buildings in India is seen as the worst terrorist attack since Sept 11th and key US ally in the war against terror, Pakistani Dictator, President Gen. Pervez Musharraf may have been involved in it.
   War support drops outside G-7
Also problematic for the US is a new poll showing support for the war on terror crumbling outside the G-7 countries. In many countries the war has almost no support at all, and there is strong opposition in Germany and Japan. Support for the war in Canada has dropped from around 80 percent to 60 percent.
In spite of the polls the US in massing troops in Kuwait, indicating an upcoming attack on Iraq. Rumsfeld is moving Zalmay Khalilzad into the state department to push for the go ahead on war with Iraq. Somalia, Yemen and Indonesia are also key war targets.

War on Iraq Coming – Dec.20.2001
Bush/Cheney appointee Donald Rumsfeld and the Wolfowitz cabal complete their takeover of the State Department at the end of December by moving Zalmay Khalilzad into a position. Khalilzad is seeking to take the Middle East portfolio when Bruce Reidel steps down later this month … and Rumsfeld continues his review of the military, redirecting it to actions in Central Asia. The War on Afghanistan began immediately after he started the review.
Other moves to solidify control of the State Department through the hawk controlled military/intelligence apparatus have led to the killing of the Bio-terror Treaty, the ABM Treaty and the extreme measures attacking civil liberties through the War on Terrorism.
Khalilzad,  Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz have been lobbying for years for a new war on Iraq.

Rushed legislation opens door to human rights violations - Fri, 14 Dec 2001
    Info from Amnesty International
The Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act, passed today, opens the door to human rights violations in the UK, Amnesty International says.
The Act will permit non-nationals to be detained without charge or trial for an indefinite period of time. People will be detained when the Home Secretary states that he reasonably believes and suspects a person to be a national security risk and a suspected "international terrorist". The Home Secretary's belief and suspicion may be based on secret evidence and then confirmed by a judicial body that can hold hearings in secret, from which the detainee and their lawyer may be excluded, and base its decision on secret evidence.
Amnesty International remains concerned that these provisions will result in the creation of a shadow criminal justice system without the safeguards of the formal system.

3,500+ Civilians Killed by Bombing in Afghanistan - 12/10/01-CommonDreams
More than 3,500 civilians have been killed in Afghanistan by U.S. bombs, according to a study to be released December 10 by Marc W. Herold, Professor of Economics, International Relations, and Women's Studies at the University of New Hampshire.
Professor Herold has been gathering data on civilian casualties since October 7 by culling information from news agencies, major newspapers, and first-hand accounts. "I decided to do the study because I suspected that the modern weaponry was not what it was advertised to be. I was concerned that there would be significant civilian casualties caused by the bombing, and I was able to find some mention of casualties in the foreign press but almost nothing in the U.S. press," said Herold.
Herold's data will be available at http://pubpages.unh.edu/~mwherold/.

US Mountain Bombing  Poisoning Water Supply – Dec.12.2001
American war planes have dumped about 2,400 heavy bombs on the mountains near Tora Bora over the last week. Some of them weigh up to 5,000 lbs.
Though only a few of Osama bin Laden's fighters have been killed, hundreds remain – some in the thousands of caves, others fleeing over the mountains. As the bombing continues no one is noting that much of the water supply of Afghanistan flows down from the mountains and the US bombing is continually poisoning that supply with depleted uranium.
A future of cancers is being insured in Afghanistan by George Bush and the Allies. Yet at the same time they are calling Osama bin Laden the root of all evil.

Paul Martin's Concentration Camp Canada Budget – Dec.10.2001
    By Gary Morton
Special shoes have been a tradition of budget days. For today's federal budget Finance Minister Paul Martin should have been wearing his concentration camp shoes. This isn't a budget for people. It's for a police state or military government.
I remember reading about one of the Jewish chaps in a concentration camp. He was about thin as a stick and pale as a stripped cucumber, his biggest worry being that the broken pieces of wire holding his dilapidated shoes on would break and leave him frozen footed and doomed.
Perhaps the liberals will soon have us all wearing those shoes.
Paul Martin's Budget 2001 is ostensibly a plan to enhance personal and economic security. It spends $7.7 billion over the next five years, but provides little more than police state measures. Genuine security for Canadians that can only come through housing programs, aid for the poor and homeless, and health care are not genuinely addressed.
Security includes air security, intelligence and policing, military, border security and the screening and jailing of entrants to Canada.
Crackdown on Immigrants: $1 billion to investigate immigrants and refugees.
    - Security Screen: $395-million for increasing immigration officers at home and abroad to screen out security risks.
    - Immigration Spy Force: 44 immigration control officers who gather intelligence on illegal immigration overseas and check for false documents will be increased to 100 and will work with American Intelligence Agencies.
    - Detention: $210-million for an enforcement plan to detain illegal immigrants, security risks and refugee claimants lacking full documentation.
    - Deportation: Increased spending to enforce deportation orders. $15-million to speed up the system so that false claimants would be removed from Canada quickly.
    - ID Cards: $287-million for magnetically scanned permanent resident cards.
War on Terror: $1.2 billion for Defence:
    - Operation Apollo: Ottawa's codename for its contribution to the war on terrorism - Mr. Martin has set aside $510-million.
    - Anti-terrorist commandos: the Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2), will be doubled at a cost of $119-million over five years.
Big Brother: $1.6 billion for Police and Spy Agencies:
    - Super Spying: The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service receive $1.6-billion over five years. The funds will allow the RCMP to upgrade key technology systems to collect and disseminate intelligence. CSIS' share will be spent on upgrading technology and equipment for intelligence gathering and analysis.
Spy Eye on the Skies: $2.2 billion for air travel security through a new federal air security authority.
    - New agency: Creation of an air security authority.
    - Sky Marshals - Armed undercover sky marshals will patrol Canadian flights, paid from a ticket tax of at least $12 for a one-way flight.
    - Screening and Bomb Detection - beefed-up screening of passengers and baggage as well as airport police and new bomb detection equipment.
    - Big Sister Airline Database - $67-million will go to setting up databases so that lists of air travellers and info from passports can be checked against upgraded security databases.
    Militarized Border Enhancements:
    - Scanners/Jail: $2.2 billion border package includes scanners, officers on patrol, detention or deportation of those who arrive.
    - Federal Aid for Multinationals: $600-million to be spent on roads and infrastructure at border crossings to facilitate trade between multinational corporations.
    - Merger of Canada/US Border Cops - $135-million to expand the integrated border teams of police, customs, and immigration officers on both sides of the border.
    - Ion Scanning - $107-million will be spent on new X-ray machines and ion scanners to detect drugs and explosives in shipments of goods.
    - Nexus - $58-million to expand Nexus, a fast-lane system for pre-checked travellers crossing the border, to several major border points.

    MP Anne M. Office Occupation UPDATE!!! - Sun, 09 Dec 2001 21:54:53
    From: Bob <bobknob2000@yahoo.com>
    Hey everyone:
Going into hour 61 everything is still going well.  We are rather anxiously awaiting the opening of the office tomorrow morning.  Right now there are approximately 20 people still at the office, but we had many more drop by to visit today.
If anyone could make it tomorrow morning for the office opening, it would be really appreciated.  The office opens at 8am, but we hope to have an extra 20 there by about 7:30, so if you're a morning person or not, get yo ass down there!!
We did have one tense moment this afternoon when some of the office workers saw a news broadcast covering our action about evicting Anne (see previous update).  They were quite worked up when they showed up at the office to discover all of the furniture placed in the parking lot.
According to the office workers (who are quite mean people by the way), our moving the furniture constitutes "property damage" (we actually fixed a desk for them that was falling apart when we got there), setting up a tent on public property is "trespassing", and refusing to leave was "aggravated assault".  Do you get the feeling they just simply wanted to get us arrested?  Not to worry though, the police showed up and confirmed our suspicions that the workers were in fact misguided, and had probably just been hanging around McLellan too long.  Apparently self-righteousness is catching.
Anyways, other than that it has been fairly calm.  But please phone in and let us hear your voice, it can get lonely upholding justice and freedom at 3am. phone number - (780) 982-5829 If not, keep those solidarity emails coming, they give me that warm-and-fuzzy feeling everytime I get one!
    love to all,

    - US expert believed behind anthrax attacks
BERLIN - The anthrax attacks in the United States were probably the work of a member of a U.S. biological warfare programme, the magazine of environment group Greenpeace Germany reported yesterday. The magazine said its article was based on information from a U.S. delegation source at the United Nations biological weapons conference in Geneva that began last week. The attacks have killed five people.
"The U.S. delegation believe it is an inside job... Their members also have more information than has been made public," Kirsten Brodde, a
reporter for the magazine, told Reuters.
The attacks prompted initial accusations by President George W. Bush that Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden may been responsible.

With the surrender of Taleban forces in Kandahar imminent, Amnesty International called for measures to be taken to ensure there will be no repetition of the recent events in Mazar-I Sharif.  Hundreds of captured Taleban fighters and others were killed in disputed circumstances at Qala-i-Jhangi fort.
"Appropriate arrangements for the processing and protection of fighters who have surrendered must be made this time," Amnesty International said.  "The International Committee of the Red Cross should be allowed to perform its role, to ensure that people are properly protected."

    Canadian Border Militarized – Dec.4.2001
    By Gary Morton
In another move to create a world state of Free Trade but Racially Profiled and Gated Citizens, U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft is putting the National Guard on duty along the Canadian border. The Canada-U.S. border management plan will see the two countries share more personal information on citizens and expand integrated border patrol units. The agreement also calls for co-ordinated visa requirements between the two countries. The RCMP and the FBI merge to a certain extent in this plan, making it perhaps the greatest blow to sovereignty contained in anti terrorist legislation. Canadians are now going to be targeted according to the prejudices of the FBI and the US Prison Nation … and a larger Pandora's Box has been opened, releasing US Police and Intelligence Agencies into Canada's government structure.

You Vote On It – Was Walk For Capitalism the Dumbest Event of the Year?
    By Gary Morton, Dec.2001
I came across the "The Global Walk for Capitalism" at Rabble.ca, where it was listed as Site of the Week. On the site a steroid-boosted geek is the model for world wide walks for Capitalism.
The Toronto Sun reports that 100 people marched down Bay St. holding signs like "Earth First ... We Can Mine Other Planets Later" and "Life, Liberty and Property."  The marchers went through the financial district, slapping blue ribbons on businesses they felt represented the capitalist spirit. Starbucks outlets on their route got rousing cheers. "In my ideal world, I envision towering, mile-high skyscrapers housing gigantic multinational corporations," said march leader Powell.
….so let the readers vote on it … does Starbuck's deserve a blue ribbon … is the Walk for Capitalism the Event of the Week … and should bin Laden blow up those mile-high corporations?

2002 G8 Summit in Kananaskis to be Militarized- Nov.30.2001
Alberta's Kananaskis resort will likely be designated a special military zone for the G8 Summit next summer. During a briefing for provincial justice ministers on the Public Security Act, a Privy Council official said provisions of the Liberal's second anti-terror bill could be used to designate a military zone around international summits.
The official specifically cited last April's Summit of the Americas in Quebec City as an example in which the new military exclusion zone power could be used, Quebec Justice Minister Paul Begin said yesterday.
Asked about the creation of military zone around Kananaskis, Alberta Solicitor General Heather Forsyth did not rule out such a drastic measure.

Afghanistan: Amnesty International calls for urgent inquiry into violence in Qala-i-Jhangi - 27 Nov 2001
Following news reports of hundreds of killings of prisoners of war during clashes within the Qala-i-Jhangi, a fort on the outskirts of Mazar-i-Sharif, Amnesty International is calling on the United Front, the United States and the United Kingdom to investigate these events.
After negotiating a surrender, hundreds of foreign troops fighting with the Taliban were escorted from Kunduz to the fort by the United Front last weekend.  The circumstances surrounding the fighting that followed are still not clear, although initial reports indicate that some prisoners overpowered guards and seized firearms.  British and US special forces are reported to have been involved in the fighting, including by directing US air strikes.
An urgent inquiry should look into what triggered this violent incident, including any shortcomings in the holding and processing of the prisoners, and into the proportionality of the response by United Front, US and UK forces.  It should make urgent recommendations to ensure that other instances of surrender and holding of prisoners do not lead to similar disorders and loss of life, and that the key role of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in overseeing the processing and treatment of prisoners is facilitated. The outcome of this inquiry, and any disciplinary or other measures that may be taken against anyone found responsible for wrongdoing, should be made public.

    From the NDP - Nov.28.2001
WELCOME TO ONT-AMERICA? - There's no need for a North American security perimeter, NDP Leader Howard Hampton said today.  He scoffed at the Conservative government's claim that Ontario and Canada must blend their immigration, refugee, policing, security and customs laws with the United States.  "There is no economic or trade evidence that a Fortress North America is necessary and there's nothing to suggest that we need to adopt American policies for domestic security reasons," Hampton said. "In fact, there's more than enough evidence to show that this is the wrong way to go." Statistics Canada reported last week that trade between Canada and the U.S. returned to normal levels about one week after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Hampton said that shows cross-border trade has not been hampered by any new security measures.  "All the Tories are doing is whipping up hysteria as a cover for their real agenda, which is to move Canada closer to becoming the 51st state," Hampton said.  He pointed to the failure of the U.S. 'war on drugs' and its inability to keep the Mexican border secure despite public expenditures of billions of dollars.  "The government's proposal is a perfect example of the American tail wagging the Ontario dog," Hampton said.
CALL OFF HYDRO PRIVATIZATION - The controversy over the sale of Hydro One sends a strong message that the NDP knows full well.  Selling off our electricity system will be an economic disaster, Howard Hampton reminded the government.  "Power rates will soar and business and consumers will suffer. So why not do the right thing and do it now: Halt the privatization of the whole system, not just Hydro One," Hampton said.  "Making Hydro One a non-profit entity won't protect consumers and industry from rate inflation As long as you put our generating capacity in private hands, prices will skyrocket as private operators seek out the biggest profit in the US.  The transmission links will still get built because private generators will pressure you to get them built.  If you want to stop Ontario from becoming California, you need to do one thing.  Scrap Hydro privatization, period."

NO CUTS - "Call off the corporate tax cuts and the private school tax credit."  It's a message New Democrats keep repeating in hope that the Conservative government will see the light.  The economy is tanking, government ministries are preparing to lop $5 billion in spending on services, staff and programs and the Tories still intend to hand out $2.4 billion in public money to their wealthy corporate friends.  As well, they will bulldoze ahead with the widely unpopular plan of giving public funds as tax credits for private schools at a cost of at least $300 million a year. The NDP has consistently opposed corporate income tax cuts.  NDP Leader Howard Hampton reminded the government again today that investments in schools, health care, environmental protection and childcare are more essential than financing tax cuts for the well-off.
PRIVATE JAIL FAILS - An outbreak of violence at Ontario's newly-opened private jail in Penetanguishene signals the Conservatives should abandon their dangerous private jail scheme, NDP Justice Critic Peter Kormos said today.  "Troubles at the Penetanguishene super jail confirm what the NDP has said all along: The Tories' for-profit jail experiment puts prison and community safety at risk," Kormos said. "The Conservatives must scrap the experiment now." Kormos called on the Conservatives to replace their American-style private jail scheme with a renewed commitment to the proper incarceration and rehabilitation of inmates in publicly-run jails. That would mean the province wresting control of the Penetanguishene super jail from its for-profit American operator and abandoning plans to privatize the Lindsay super jail. In the U.S., these private companies have dreadful record of problems, including escapes. "Violence at the Penetanguishene super jail has shown dungeons for dollars are not the answer. And if the Tories refuse to back down and more inmates flood into the jail, things are likely to only get worse," Kormos said.

Warlords, not Democracy will Rule in Afghanistan – Nov.14.2001
The war for control of Afghanistan has seen civiliansand soldiers treated as something less than human. Recently hundreds of people were summarily executed or killed by bombs. Soldiers were shot and left on the street without burial. In some areas the US bombed every structure, every tree and burned every blade of grass. Civilians and children are still collateral damage, people that get blown up if they are in the way between the forces of the West and Osama bin Laden.
There has been no basic respect for fundamental human rights or the conventions of war at all. The Nazis almost look good in comparison.
Now former Northern Alliance President Burhanuddin Rabbani is returning to rule again, and President George W. Bush is saying there needs to be "a balanced, broad-based" government installed in Kabul. And it must be a government, he added, that "must export neither terror nor drugs, and ... must respect fundamental human rights."
If this seems strange to some people it might be because the West has systematically used intelligence agencies like the CIA to destroy every peoples democratic government and movement in the Middle East this century. We have been the enemies of democracy there. The Taliban as a movement never had an honest political base. They were the creation of intelligence agencies.
In reality any new government will be much like the Taliban or even worse when internal war develops. Past governments, including the Taliban, have survived with the support of the warlords that flourish across Afghanistan. They are the bases of power and these warlords have a vested interest in smuggling drugs and weapons.
In spite of what George Bush says, he has invested in them. Supporting the exiled northern warlords in the battles that led to the fall of Kabul. They are the foundation of any new society being constructed and that means the Afghan government will remain corrupt.
Bush and Blair would have us believe that a new government will create civil society and some rights for women. But that is unrealistic when the real powers are the same warlords that are showing no respect for human life. We in the West have acted in the same way – with fighter planes we've told the Afghanis they have the right to go along with us or be shot and bombed into the nearest ditch.
The foundation of civil society is respect for human life. All other rights rise from that. Our world powers and the West don't have that respect any more. So don't expect to see it in the governments they create.

    Abdul the Dangerous – Nov.11.2001
The Toronto Muslim community held a demo today against the war. This rally of mostly families from mosques drew an army of cops. There were rafts of motorcycle cops, red unmarked vans, paddy wagons, all sorts of uniforms and undercover men and the media was nearly all police media.
Camera guys at the front of the rally were cops with 10-thousand-dollar zoom attachments. While I took photos of the banners with my 99-dollar digital camera, one cop gave a cameraman instructions. "That's Abdul there putting on the blue jacket. Make sure you get solid footage of him."
Abdul appeared to be one of the organizers of the rally. I took his photo but deleted it. Now I wonder if he knows he's under constant police surveillance.
So much for the claim that political organizers won't be harassed under anti terrorism legislation. They are already under heavy surveillance and the bill hasn't even gone through yet.

Stop the Tory Clawback of Disability Benefits - Nov.6.2001
from the NDP -  MPP WANTS A RAISE - FOR OTHERS - Sault Ste. Marie MPP Tony Martin reminded the Conservatives that families on Ontario Works or recipients of disability supports have had their benefits frozen since 1995.  Meanwhile, the cost of living has increased by 9.5 per cent. Martin has spearheaded a drive to stop the Conservative government from clawing back the child benefit allowance that Ottawa sends to Ontario's poorest families.  He has also introduced a bill to provide people on disability allowances a cost of living increase every April 1 to keep pace with rising costs of food, clothing, housing and necessities.  "Children are suffering.  Families can't put food on the table, can't afford the winter clothing they need, and are terrified by the upcoming stresses of Christmas. Stopping the claw back would give back almost $100 per child every month to families who need it most.  Surely Minister, you don't think children should be penalized for being born into poor families," Martin said in the house today.

War on Terrorism Targets Green Party USA -  Sat, 3 Nov 2001 13:48:57 -0500
    From: "Paul" <webmaster@globalcircle.net>
    * The Green Party USA statement on the war against Afghanistan is at http://www.greenparty.org/911.html
Armed government agents grabbed Nancy Oden, Green Party USA coordinating committee member, Thursday at Bangor International Airport in Bangor Maine, as she attempted to board an American Airlines flight to Chicago.
"An official told me that my name had been flagged in the computer," a shaken Oden said. "I was targeted because the Green Party USA opposes the bombing of innocent civilians in Afghanistan."
Oden, a long-time organic farmer and peace activist in northern Maine, was ordered away from the plane. Military personnel with automatic weapons surrounded Oden and instructed all airlines to deny her passage on ANY flight. "I was told that the airport was closed to me until further notice and that my ticket would not be refunded," Oden said.
Oden is scheduled to speak in Chicago Friday night on a panel concerning pesticides as weapons of war. She had helped to coordinate the Green Party USA's antiwar efforts these past few months, and was to report on these to The Greens national committee. "Not only did they stop me at the airport but some mysterious party had called the hotel and cancelled my reservation," Oden said.
The Greens National Committee -- the governing body of the Green Party USA -- is meeting in Chicago Nov. 2-4 to hammer out the details of national campaigns against bio-chemical warfare, the spraying of toxic pesticides, genetic engineering, and the Party's involvement in the burgeoning peace movement.
"I am shocked that US military prevented one of our prominent Green Party members from attending the meeting in Chicago," said Elizabeth Fattah, a GPUSA representative from Pennsylvania who drove to Chicago. "I am outraged at the way the Bill of Rights is being trampled upon."
Chicago Green activist Lionel Trepanier concluded, "The attack on the right of association of an opposition political party is chilling. The harassment of peace activists is reprehensible."

The march will proceed to the CNN Building where it will culminate into a rally featuring street theatre, speakers, music, and puppets.

CLUSTER BOMBS AND COALITIONS - 2 Nov 2001
OTTAWA - New Democrat Leader Alexa McDonough said in the Commons Tuesday Canadians want to know what role their country has in shaping strategy for the current campaign in Afghanistan.
"For example," Ms. McDonough said, "the U.S. is dropping cluster bombs. Cluster bombs are like landmines, a lethal weapon killing innocent civilians, particularly children, something that Canada has strongly opposed in the past.  Did Canada approve of the use of cluster bombs? Was Canada even consulted on the use of cluster bombs?"
She said Canadians want to know if this coalition means every partner has a say. "Is that not the point of a coalition?" she asked. "Yet in Afghanistan it appears that the United States alone seems to be making the decisions about strategy, about tactics and about targets."

The rations are square-shaped and are packaged in plastic. They are full of good nutritious, Halal food,'' prepared according to Islamic precepts.

From the  NDP Daily News DigestOct 29-01
PRIVATE POWER - The Conservatives cost taxpayers a bundle when they leased the Bruce nuclear plant to a multinational corporation without letting the auditor see the secret deal first, NDP Leader Howard Hampton said today.
Despite a push by New Democrat MPP Shelley Martel a year and a half ago to have the auditor examine the controversial electricity privatization deal, Conservatives blocked any review before the deal was signed. "Selling off a $7.7-billion asset for a couple of hundred million dollars is never a good deal," Hampton told the finance minister.  "The fact of the matter is that for a $7.7-billion asset, British Energy is only going to pay rental fees of $16 million a year. What a giveaway! Yet, when it's over, the people of Ontario will have to pick up the costs of decommissioning the nuclear facility and the costs of storing the nuclear waste. You're giving away the profits to your corporate friends for virtually nothing and you're loading the people of Ontario with all of the debt down the road," Hampton said. "The Provincial Auditor was delayed from looking at this deal for over a year and a half by your government. You used every stalling tactic, every procedural step you could to avoid having this deal reviewed by the Provincial Auditor. So I say to you, before you sell off any more stations, nuclear or coal-fired or anything else, if you believe that all of the information is out on this deal, then put all of the documents on the table here today."
SENIORS SHUT OUT - The Conservative government has silenced seniors in the debate over their health care in Ontario, NDP Health Critic Shelley Martel said today.  The Nickel Belt MPP revealed that a Ministry of Health review of Community Care Access Centres has shut out representatives from the Ontario Coalition of Senior Citizens' Organizations, which represents 500,000 seniors from 130 groups. "Seniors deserve a voice in any discussion about the future of long-term care in Ontario. When the Conservatives silence seniors, they're silencing those with the most to lose. That's unacceptable," Martel said.  The OCSCO has been a leader in the fight for high-quality care for seniors. Martel called on the government to meet with the coalition and engage in meaningful consultation with its members over the future of long-term care and home care. Since the Conservatives capped funding for 43 provincial Community Care Access Centres, the resulting shortfall is $175 million.

Canada-Colombia Solidarity Campaign Accused of Being Terrorist Group
TORONTO -- Oct. 23 -- The Canada-Colombia Solidarity Campaign is defending itself against a false accusation by National Post columnist Diane Francis.  In an Oct. 16 column, Francis called the group a terrorist front.
The CCSC does solidarity work with Colombian groups who are resisting violence and working on peaceful alternatives.
The group says, "The attempt to discredit the CCSC is a part of the overall strategy to keep the invisible struggles invisible, to conflate them with terrorism, and to justify the repression and destruction of alternatives. On October 15, the U.S.suggested that a war on Colombia would not be ruled out as part of its campaign against terrorism."

Letters Cut as Toronto Star Frowns on Animal Rights – Oct.25.2001
Canadian citizens and Ontario animal lovers showered the Star with letters after the paper ran two mean-spirited Ellie Tesher columns. Anne Gibson of the Toronto Coalition For Bill C-15 anti-cruelty legislation says people on her contact list sent in dozens of letters opposing the Star's viewpoint. The Star did not publish any of those letters.
Ms. Tesher's columns paint animal activists as terrorists. She wants to kill a federal bill (C-15) that would increase penalties for cruelty to animals. Her feeling is that animal experimentation, factory farming and other cruel business uses of animals could be under threat if the critters gain legal status as more than property.
The extreme nature of Tesher's columns and the Star's failure to publish letters led some people to speculate as to whether TorStar has investments in pharmaceuticals or factory farming.
My feeling is that the Star's new attitude may originate with the appointment of Robert Pritchard as President. Pritchard headed the University of Toronto before moving to the Star. He had an office decorated with trophies commemorating the many protests against his administration.
Pritchard probably views animal cruelty as a commodity and may be using his influence and prejudices to have the Star defend his old turf and animal experimentation at U of T.

AT A MINIMUM - At the very least, the Conservative government should increase Ontario's minimum wage to $7.50 an hour immediately, NDP Leader Howard Hampton said in the Legislature today.   A new poll just released in the US shows that 81 per cent of Americans favour  raising their minimum wage again to stimulate the economy.  The American minimum wage is already higher than Ontario's.  Hampton's proposal makes Ontario's lowest hourly wage, frozen since 1995, equivalent to the current American minimum wage after conversion.

    - Authorize expanded use of covert searches for any criminal investigation, thus allowing the government to enter your home, office or other private place and conduct a search, take photographs, and download your computer files without notifying you until later.
    - Expand the definition of terrorism in such a way that could potentially allow the government  to levy heavy penalties for relatively minor offenses, including political protests. Permit authorities to indefinitely detain non-citizens without meaningful judicial review.
    - Minimize judicial supervision of law enforcement wiretap authority.

    Neo-Nazis Attack in Parkdale – Oct.15.2001
A group of activists were attacked on Saturday, October 13th at the corner of Queen and Lansdowne in Parkdale. Since the tragedy of September 11th there has been an increase in sightings of Neo-nazi groups on Queen Street west between Dufferin and Roncesvalles Ave. There have been unconfirmed reports of attacks but nothing this bold. In broad daylight on a busy street corner they jumped a comrade who was on the megaphone doing a speak-out against the war and against the racist backlash. After the incident, we continued our leafleting and began calling on the community to join us for a rally on Thursday, October 18th at 6:30 p.m. at the Parkdale Library. The response from the people we spoke to was overwhelmingly "We don't Want Nazis in our neighbourhood!" We are calling on all community members to mobilize and send a strong message to these thugs. We will not accept this in our community! We have the right to free speech and we have the right to live without fascist intimidation. Join Us on Thursday.

Bicycle Master Plan: Will it Pass Budget Review - Oct.15.2001
    From Nancy Smith Lea <nsmithlea@kf.oise.utoronto.ca>
The Toronto Bike Plan was adopted in principle in July but it still needs to get funded. This plan doesn't go nearly far enough to address conditions for cyclists downtown and the amount requested for cycling infrastructure is clearly inadequate. BUT if it's this plan or no plan--we want it! Below is ARC's letter in support. Why not send one too?
    To:  Toronto City Council
    Re:  Bicycle Master Plan
In anticipation of the upcoming budget review, Toronto's Advocacy for Respect for Cyclists (ARC) wishes to voice its support for full funding for the Bicycle Master Plan.  Although we believe the plan misses some of the most highly used and perilous downtown bicycle routes, we recognize that it will improve the situation for thousands of cyclists in many areas of the city.  It is our hope that in addition to supporting the current plan, Council will instruct the Transportation Department to develop a plan for the safe passage of cyclists on Bloor, College, Dundas, Queen, and King Streets, where cycling collisions are most frequent[1].  Cyclists will feel particularly ignored and unrepresented if Council decides it can afford $170 million for a 2km Front Street extension to add another 2400 unwanted automobiles per hour to the downtown core, but not the $70 million required to add over 1000km of bicycle lanes all over the city.  If the Bicycle Master Plan succeeds in its goal of doubling the number of bicycle trips by 2010, it will be a truly significant benefit not just to Toronto cyclists but to everyone who appreciates clean air or more efficient transportation.
Please vote "YES" to full funding for the Bicycle Master Plan.
    Sincerely,
    Advocacy for Respect for Cyclists

Ontario Action Alert: Harris to Make Hunting a Legal Right! – 16.Oct.2001
    From: "Plourde, Denise" <DPlourde@contactpsc.com
On October 5th 2001, the Government of Ontario announced its plan to make hunting and fishing a "legal right" under the proposed Heritage Hunting and Fishing Act. If allowed to pass, this legislation would elevate the recreational slaughter of wildlife to the same level as such fundamental liberties such as the freedom of speech and assembly.
The government has also proposed to establish a Fish and Wildlife Heritage Commission, to be made up of representatives from the hunting and fishing lobby. Under the proposed legislation, the Commission will gain almost exclusive control over wildlife management in Ontario.
WE CANNOT ALLOW THIS LAW TO PASS!!
Ontario residents have only until NOVEMBER 4th to submit letters in opposition to the government's legislative proposal. Please print off and sign your name and address to the letter below (or better yet, write your own letter) and let the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources know that you object to the proposed Heritage Hunting and Fishing Act and the establishment of a Fish and Wildlife Heritage Commission.

    Child welfare cuts – Oct.15.2001
TORIES PLAN TO ROB KIDS - NDP Deputy Leader Marilyn Churley moved to stop pending Ontario-wide cuts to child welfare services.  The Toronto-Danforth MPP released an internal memo from the Children's Aid Society of Toronto warning aid workers of the coming funding restrictions that the government will impose as a result of a recession made worse by the events of September 11th. The memo states: "We were informed that recessionary trends in the province have worsened and been further exacerbated by the events of September 11th. As a result we were informed that all government spending is being affected and funding for child welfare agencies across Ontario will be seriously restricted."  Said Churley:  "We saw the impact of your government's chronic under-funding of the child welfare system in the death of baby Jordan Heikamp. Haven't you learned anything from that death? At a time when Children's Aid workers can't even begin to tackle all of their casework, how could you possibly restrict their funding even further? Guarantee me right now that you will not cut a dime from child welfare programs that are already stretched beyond their capabilities."

Star Ray TV to Protest at CRTC Oct 19th
Jan Pachul, operator of Star Ray TV, the Community TV station in the east end of Toronto for the past two years, has had his CRTC hearing, and it could very well be the first many appearances of this long-running TV horror show
On September 19, 2001 the CRTC called Pachul to appear before them to explain "whether he was operating a television undertaking without a licence." Pachul freely admits that he has indeed been on the air, serving a widening viewership in Greater Toronto roughly spanning the area from Scarborough on the east to Lawrence and Weston Road on the west, and from the lake to East York in the north.
"The real question, to me" says Pachul, "is why won't they grant me a licence to operate a low power TV station devoted to public service?" He has filed for a Judicial Review of CRTC actions from the Federal Appeals Court of Canada. In the meantime, probably fired up with the huge amount of press Pachul has generated, a number of other, richer players are entering the area of public service. Applications have been made for licences by at least three other companies to provide locally oriented TV service.

PROTECT CIVIL RIGHTS - From the NDP(Oct.12.2001)
Some 20 leaders of community organizations met for breakfast this morning with Hampton, MPPs Peter Kormos and Michael Prue. They expressed their concerns about the Conservative government's erosion of civil rights in Ontario.  In Question Period, Kormos had some harsh words for the solicitor general, who tacitly backs a policy of ethnic profiling and insidious police surveillance hit lists.  "First you appoint a security adviser who believes in and advocates ethnic profiling. Now your Solicitor General says that he endorses the Toronto Police's thousand-person hit list, their target list.  The question is, how do you get on this target list, this hit list, and what do innocent people do to get their names off this list?  Ethnic profiling, geographic profiling-call it by any other name; it still means that people are being targeted because of where they come from. That means that they're being targeted because of the colour of their skin, because of their surnames, because of their religions.  Apparently, a list of 1,000 people exists here in Toronto and people want to know what criteria get people on that list. One person told us-these were hard-working people that Howard Hampton and I met with-they're afraid. They're afraid that they're being spied on for no good reason. One person told us today, 'I never thought that I'd experience in my lifetime what Japanese-Canadians went through.' What we're asking of you, sir, is very simple. Put it on the record today. What are the criteria for the creation of a surveillance list that you, as Solicitor General, endorse?"

The British public are not convinced about the benefits of globalisation.  Only one in eight agree that globalisation enhances everyone's quality of life and 58% believe that 'what's good for business is not good for most people in developing poorer countries'. Around nine in ten believe that government should stand up to multinationals. There is also considerable public sympathy with the ideals of anti-globalisation protestors, with two in five adults thinking that the protestors are raising genuine concerns and issues shared by many people around the world.

Police make list of 'suspected terrorist sympathizers' in Ontario - Oct.11.2001
Civil liberties in Ontario are under siege and the Conservative government is part of the problem, NDP Leader Howard Hampton said today. Hampton called on the Conservatives to disavow a campaign by their appointee to the Toronto Police Services Board that targets citizens for police investigations "who may have said something that might lead to police raising their eyebrows." Norm Gardner told a radio station that Toronto police are compiling a list of hundreds of people to target for surveillance. People are ending up on the hit list based on hearsay, tips from informants, suspicious or disgruntled neighbours, he said.  "The Conservatives should put an end to this type of harassment," said Hampton.
"This type of 'thought police' activity has no place in Ontario. The government should insist that people not be targeted because of the colour of their skin, the language they speak, the place they were born, or the thoughts they may have," said Hampton, who has also criticized the government's acceptance of "ethnic profiling" of citizens by police and security personnel.

However, justice will not be served by bombing civilian targets such as power plants and the infrastructure that supports civilian necessities."
Ms. McDonough condemned the Prime Minister's decision to commit Canada's military without seeking Parliamentary authorization through a vote in the House of Commons.

A Better Way to Oppose the War – Oct.9.2001
    by Gary Morton
Legal opinions are out on this war, and some show the bombing of Afghanistan to be a violation of the UN Charter … meaning people killed or wounded in the attack are victims of crime and terror.
In Canada our government has decided that we are George Bush's lapdogs. We will loyally follow the USA to war against any nation, group or organization tagged as the terrorist enemy. We will do this without any debate in parliament or any genuine attempt to inform the public of the hazards of this decision. Never mind that it is a huge gamble ... one where we fan the flames of a volatile Middle East, hoping we might get lucky and bag some terrorists.
If total war without public consent is legal under Canadian law, it shouldn't be.
Our options as citizens seem to be to protest or formulate some sort of legal challenge … two poor options.
Legal challenges usually fail and take too long, and this government is not going to open an ear to voices of dissent. These are politicians and pundits that talk about war as a price for freedom. Which is a lie when they are working daily to curtail our civil liberties.
This war is about security, not freedom … security for the corporate engine of the West, at any price. It is being conducted by a shaky US-led coalition, so perhaps we should aim at the weak links in that coalition.
The weak links or countries to lobby are India, Jordan, Germany, possibly Spain, and Turkey. Convince them to pull out and Bush's war legs will crumble. Other countries that appear to have reservations are Japan, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Oman, United Arab Emirates and China. NATO is also a possible weak link as individual members have expressed concern about the use of the mutual defense clause.
Let's work on them before Bush gets down to his last mile.
The reason I say last mile is because there are a total of 18 miles of railroad tracks in Afghanistan. They are about the only thing other than civilians to bomb there. Bush appears to be tossing down about 20 million tons of explosives per mile of track, and once he gets down to that last mile, he'll need another nation to attack.
As his lapdog we'll go with him, our mouths filled with the bones of the martyrs we've created in this war on terrorism.
I suppose there could be various endings if the war continues. My guess is that in Canada it will end in the 60-million-dollar bunker our leaders are constructing under Toronto. The mayor, the premier and the prime minister will be down there in radiation suits, eating food they bought with dollars cut from social programs. If it isn't Doc Strangelove, then we'll still be alive and in the terror above. Yet I suspect that terror will be occurring behind the barbed wire of a police state, and it will have little to do with Osama Bin what's-his-name.

ACLU : Oppose New Extreme Senate Terrorism Bill! - 08 Oct 2001
In a dramatic departure from the anti-terrorism bill adopted by the House Judiciary Committee, Senate leaders have introduced the “Uniting and Strengthening America (USA) Act” (S.1510), a bill that would significantly undermine many of the freedoms that Americans hold dear.  It is likely that this legislation will be rushed onto the Senate floor this week without any committee review.
Among the bill’s most troubling provisions are measures that would give the government the authority to spy on its own people, enable the Attorney General unlimited authority to incarcerate non-citizens, and allow the government to expand its use of secret searches.
Take Action!  Don’t allow Congress to abandon our cherished constitutional safeguards during this time of national crisis.  You can read more about this legislation and send a FREE FAX to your Senators from our action alert at:

Bush to Attack other Countries - Oct.8.2001
As the bombing of Afghanistan continues, civilians are dying and President Bush has announced that he will attack other nations. A story at Wired called Nuke em on High  details the possible use of tactical Nukes to destroy bunkers in Afghanistan.
Canada is new deeply committed to this war though it hasn't  been debated in parliament.  Art Eggleton says Canadian Forces will become an integral part of the overall campaign, supplying troops, planes and war ships.
In the Middle East the attacks have stirred up a cauldron of dissent, and initial results are that the war on terrorism will become an engine creating more terrorism and possibly civil war in nuclear powered Pakistan.

Demonstration at the US Consulate in Toronto as Cruise Missiles hit Kabul – Oct.7.2001
    Report by Gary Morton
The USA and Britain attacked Afghanistan with cruise missiles today, and Prime Minister Chretien appeared on TV to tell Canadians to keep living normal lives. Those words were ignored as a crowd gathered to protest at the US Consulate shortly after the bombing began. This time protesters face media, police and governments that do not want to tolerate dissent or allow the freedom that used to belong to the West.
Though the missile attacks on Afghanistan are billed as surgical strikes against terrorist bases, the attacks are massive and against cities like Kabul.
Osama Bin Laden appeared via tape on TV in the Middle East before the bombs flew. He confirmed that the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center were to punish the USA for its foreign policy. Osama noted that people in the West ignore mass killing in other parts of the world … like the 500,000 children that died due to sanctions against Iraq, and the bombing of Lebanon and so forth. Calling on his people to rise up he promised that there will be no peace in the West until there is peace in Palestine.
After Osama Bin Laden's taped message some media pundits were openly worried about news coming out by satellite TV in the Middle East. It can't be slanted or censored much by Western media. This could mean that viewers in the West will be presented with the truth, which is something our governments and media don't want.
Canada is to play a support role in a growing invasion that is certain to fail in the long run. And the television news said there is no dissent in Canadian parliament.
If not there should be because this is not a battle on the flat sands of Iraq. George Bush has gone to the mountain, and it may well erupt and fall on all of us. There will be no winners in this one.

Genetically Modified Food Issue a Step Up on the Political Agenda – Oct.8.2001
    By Gary Morton
The Council of Canadians held a national day of action in support of the mandatory labeling of GM foods on Saturday. Organizers Brent Patterson and Kim Phillips plus members and supporters passed out leaflets outside Loblaws' superstore at Bathurst/St. Clair Toronto.
Public support for GM  food labeling is strong and some politicians are now catching onto that. Federal NDP environment critic Joe Comartin is out in support of the campaign for labeling and liberal leadership candidate Allan Rock is now a strong supporter. Liberal MP Charles Caccia has a private member's bill before Parliament to amend the Food and Drug Act to require mandatory labeling of foods that contain genetically altered materials.
In Europe you must label if there is anything genetically modified in the food. Rules come into effect in January in Japan and in December in Australia and New Zealand.
Canada has been on the wrong track, using tax dollars in support of Genetic Engineering. Ottawa spent $2.8 million last spring on a door-to-door brochure extolling the virtues of GM foods. Industry Canada is a member of BioteCanada, bestowing corporate welfare on huge companies like Monsanto. An American company, Monsanto just sucked a million dollars from the government to aid in the development of GE wheat that Canadian farmers and industry do not want.
Monsanto, Novartis and other large genetic engineering firms are also coming under scrutiny in the wake of the Sept.11th terrorist attack in the United States. They have made the technology for dangerous techniques that can alter plant and animal species too readily available.

    No Nukes Is Good Nukes
That Osama bin Laden and his web of terrorists might have nuclear weapons doesn't bear thinking about, but Wired raises this specter without bringing much meat to the meal. There's some discussion about suitcase-sized nukes and gossip that the Soviets lost a few during the break-up of the Soviet Union, as well as informer reports that bin Laden has been after nuclear materials for a long time. The story is thin, if terrifying, but it points to a fat resource put up by Carey Sublette. Nuclear Weapons Frequently Asked Questions (NWFAQ) is a megaton of information about nuclear weapons in general, organized into 14 big chapters (two aren't online yet). You can download a .zip file of the whole thing to read at your convenience. Carey thinks public commentary and awareness is essential to combat proliferation and guard against misuse. His site is huge, fairly authoritative, and readable, a serious place for a serious subject.

    Harris' War on Immigrants
RACIST POLICY A SHAME- The premier is fanning the flames of fear and racism with his newly announced war on immigrants, policies that could allow police to single out and scapegoat people based on skin colour, religion, language or birthplace, NDP Leader Howard Hampton charged today.  He chastised the premier for media comments that linked immigrants with danger and terrorists. "Premier, people have died (in the US attacks), so people are scared. But could you tell me how fanning the flames of fear, how equating immigration with terrorism, does anything positive, does anything to help the situation in Ontario today? People what to know what you can effectively do rather than simply fanning fears," Hampton said.
'ETHNIC PROFILING' A CONCERN- Human rights Critic Peter Kormos today called on the Conservative government to distance itself from a proposal by Lewis Mackenzie's that racial profiling is necessary in Ontario to fight terrorism.  The premier has hired Mackenzie as a special security advisor to the Conservatives. In a radio interview September 12, the retired major-general said:  "I'm sorry, more current attention is going to have to be paid to people who are obviously, potentially part of that group. ... At some stage you have to say, "Look, I'm terribly sorry the odds are you're not involved but you're going to receive more thorough interrogation." "There is no place for this type of policy in Ontario," said Kormos. "The Conservatives should distance themselves from Mr. Mackenzie's 'ethnic profiling' proposal and promise Ontario that people will never be targeted because of their skin colour, the language they speak, and the place they were born."

Philadelphia, PA - “Resistance against oppressive US foreign policy and the School of Assassins is a necessity, not a crime!”  This was the presiding tone among the more than 50 supporters who held igil outside the Philadelphia courthouse this morning as the five SOA Watch activists went on trial for peacefully protesting the School of the Americas (SOA), located at Ft. Benning, GA.  Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, from Detroit, Michigan, offered  eloquent testimony about the atrocities committed by graduates of the SOA.  Represented by former Pennsylvania Attorney General Shane Creamer (who took the case pro bono) and Public Defender Shawn Nolan, the activists were acquitted on all charges (disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstructing justice, obstructing a highway, and conspiracy to obstruct a highway).
During the Republican National Convention (July 31, 2000), the five enacted a massacre carried out by SOA graduates, presided over by Uncle Sam.  Defendant Laurel Paget-Seekins stated, “We put the SOA on trial today and the verdict shows that the real crime is the training of soldiers to repress their own people.  We will continue to nonviolently act to close this school  of terror until it is shut down for good.”

    Toronto report by Gary Morton
Though it got called on short notice today's Walk for Peace & Global Solidarity became the largest demonstration of the year. People from numerous social justice and anti-racism groups chose to show.
Sunshine and warmth filled the day. At the beginning I tried to find a spot where I could photograph the full length of the march as it circled to head off for the US Consulate. That wasn't possible as it was too big. While trying to get that photo I discovered that the event could have been even bigger. People passing through the park complained that they hadn't seen any announcement of it in the media.

    Digital Photos:

    http://home.eol.ca/~command/sept2902.jpg
    http://home.eol.ca/~command/sept2903.jpg

Part of a pan-Canadian Day of Action Against War And Racism that included rallies in Vancouver, Halifax and Montreal, the demo didn't get much media coverage. With their War on Terrorism banners, the mainstream press has left the concept of peace out of the equation and out of the news. It might even be said that a reason for marches is that so many people are sick of the lies, bullshit and propaganda filling the daily news.
This new peace movement represents an educated culture existing in parallel with the culture of brainwashed warmongers that the pollsters tap. Authorities are treating this movement as illegitimate and began by attempting to provoke a confrontation. The rally was to go down Yonge Street, where it would have been visible to a larger crowd. Police prohibited that and openly threatened to jail the organizers and make mass arrests if demonstrators did not follow a route chosen by them. We had the numbers to disobey police, but organizers were left with little choice other than to avoid an ugly scene that would grant a propaganda opportunity to Toronto's mainstream War Media.
Terrorism is linked to suffering caused by the policies of globalization and arms manufacturing, and though the Mobilization for Global Justice and students made up a large portion of the crowd, none of the other groups thought that peace was a simple matter of avoiding a war in Afghanistan. There are definite links to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Hostility and Terror are not products solely produced by a variety of Islamic extremists. The West is breeding suffering, unrest and terrorism through the implementation of foreign policy designed to allow the rape of the planet by
global corporations. And this means that any War on Terrorism has to begin at home.
At Queen's Park Hajera Rostam said that Afghani-Canadians are being targeted, and her talk reflected the concerns of most of the people. One picket sign said Taliban do not equal Afghanistan. Which is true as most Afghanis don't support the oppressive Taliban. They are impoverished victims caught between the Taliban and the angry West.
This war is not against visible nations, but against terrorism. At the American Consulate, Tariq Ali attacked the use of that concept.  "You do not fight terror with terror," Ali said. "…The rule of the West is to punish the crimes of our enemies but reward the crimes of our friends." Tariq is also concerned about the way these events are being used to attack our civil liberties and to introduce more restrictions for people of the "wrong colour".
The march ended at the City Hall Peace Garden. It proved that we have a large culture of peace in Toronto … and that the challenge is to get the message to the rest of society. The larger media conglomerates are a formidable foe working to magnify the terror so it can be used by corporate and government forces to remove civil liberties and grow the same oppressive global agenda that created oppression and terrorism in the first place.

Police Dog Critical Mass Ride – Sept.29.2001
The Toronto police put last night's Critical Mass Bike ride under special surveillance. Four cruisers showed up, ticketed one rider, then followed the ride about the city at its tail with their spinners flashing like it was some sort of emergency. The ride ended at the small park by Hart House and people dispersed in various directions to confuse police.

War on Terror or War without Evidence – Sept.29.2001
The heavily armed boy scouts sent by the USA and Britain into Afghanistan are also authorized to do a hit on bin Laden, so we have to wonder why they don't want him alive to testify?
CNN news talks of a letter outlining the terrorists' mind set and linking three of the attacks. The letters were found in a lost suitcase, an abandoned vehicle and the wreckage of Flight 11. Perhaps the next letter will be found embedded in a meteor fragment.
In profiles released on the terrorists yesterday, US intelligence appears to know very little. Those tracked are mostly (though they're not sure) from Saudi Arabia and Algiers. Some lived in Germany for a time and in the USA and Toronto. The only link appears to be to an intelligence operative of Saddam Hussein. There is only a possible link to bin Laden. So why are we in Afghanistan and so certain bin Laden is the big wheel behind all of this?

Nuclear Waste Plan Totally Unsatisfactory - Sept.29.3001
    from the NDP
OTTAWA - The   federal government's nuclear fuel waste bill allows the nuclear industry to make all of the decisions, in too short a time, probably using methodology relatively inexpensive for the industry but totally unsatisfying for the Canadian public, New Democrat environment critic Joe Comartin said in the Commons Thursday.
He said the NDP would support the bill in second reading to make sure it has thorough review at the committee stage.
"The work in that committee hopefully will get us to a result by way of significant amendments that in fact would make the treatment of nuclear
waste something in which Canada can be a leader in the world, as opposed to what we see in the bill now," Mr. Comartin said.
He said the NDP "will attempt to get changes is the composition of the panel that will form that commission (overseeing nuclear waste), because as it stands now the only people who would be on it are from the industry. Those people who need regulation would be doing the regulating."
For the full text of Joe Comartin's speech on the Nuclear Fuel Waste Act, please e-mail info@fed.ndp.ca, and write "Nuclear Waste" in the subject field.

HAMPTON SEEKS INQUIRY - Howard Hampton and the NDP continue to press for a public inquiry into the death of Dudley George at Ipperwash in 1995. Court documents the government tried to hide reveal that the premier took leadership in the decisions that led to George's death.  Harris told the legislature he had no role in the OPP moving in to clear native protesters out of the park.  But court submissions noted that Harris would "take the lead" in deciding when the OPP made its move.  At a Sept. 5, 1995 meeting, a senior Harris staffer reported that the premier "did not want to be seen working with Indians at all" and rejected the OPP's recommended cautious and conciliatory approach.  The premier's contradictions trouble Hampton. "These documents make it clear that Mr. Harris misled the Legislature about his involvement in the Ipperwash tragedy. That's a serious breach of trust. He should call a public inquiry or step down," he said.
ELECTRIC SHOCK - The Conservatives are risking jobs and the financial health of families by pursuing the flawed sell-off of Ontario's public electricity system, NDP Leader Howard Hampton told the Legislature today.  "The economy is faltering and a major consumers' watchdog in the U.S. has told lawmakers there to stop privatizing electricity," Hampton said. "What more does the premier need to know before he halts the sell off of our power supply? "
During Question Period, when quizzed by Hampton, the premier was unable to name one jurisdiction where hydro privatization and deregulation have resulted in lower electricity prices or more reliable service.  Hampton cited a new report from the Consumers Federation of America that warns US lawmakers to suspend any plans to privatize.  According to the Wall Street Journal, 22 states already have.  The consumers group found that electricity privatization has "fatal flaws" and that consumers inevitably will pay
considerably more for electricity as they have in Pennsylvania, Montana, New York, the UK, California and elsewhere.
RENT ROLLBACK - In Toronto, since August alone, 55,000 tenant households have been hit with new landlord applications to raise their rent.  While Conservatives and Liberals are content to line the landlords' pockets, MPP Rosario Marchese has joined the City of Toronto in calling for rent rollbacks that would prevent landlords from jacking up rents above the rate of inflation.  This would save the average Toronto tenant $1,020 in refunds, Marchese pointed out.  He's also advocating a return to real rent control and the construction of affordable, rental housing.

    USA Routinely Blocked Anti-Terrorist Resolutions – Sept.2001
The United States routinely opposes allies such as Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom in UN resolutions condemning terrorism, genocide, war crimes and other "crimes against humanity." Many times the US casts  the sole opposing vote. See U.N. Resolution E/CN.4/1998/L.7, for example, which condemns "all acts" of terrorism sponsored by both Palestinians and Israelis (vote 51-1 in favor, United States opposing). In 1998, 120 nations voted in favor of an International Criminal Court capable of prosecuting cases like those of September 11th. The United States joined only 6 other countries, including China and Iraq, in opposing the Court. In order for the Court to now take effect, 60 countries must ratify  the treaty. As of 28 June 2001, only 36 countries have done so (http://www.hrw.org/campaigns/icc/).

Threats of Violence Disrupt Toronto Vigil for Mourning – Sept.16.2001
    By Gary Morton

    Photos:
    - Child with Flowers at US Consulate in Toronto
    - Banner - We Mourn for all Victims of War and Terrorism

A vigil for mourning at the US Consulate went a bit sour at the outset when police forced mourners across the road. Officers seized Laurel Smith of Toronto Action for Social Change and dragged her over to a traffic island on University Avenue.
There have been people mourning at the consulate all weekend, placing flowers, candles and teddy bears on the grass and steps. Today some of them had little tolerance for people arriving with peace banners. They tried to pick fights and generally expressed their support for war not peace. These folks were of the patriotic sort that have been brainwashed by the mainstream media. One man was dressed in an American Flag.
People like Laurel came to mourn all victims of terrorism and most believe that working for peace, economic justice and education can reduce terrorism.
Bombing can create more victims of terror, and the child in the photo listed above was probably another victim … as it did not help her to see that adults wanted to fight rather than to mourn.

Democracy Shut Down at US Consulate Sept. 16
    From:   TASC <tasc@pop.web.ca>
It was supposed to be a day of mourning and a call for reconciliation and peace, but Toronto police would have none of it this afternoon in front of the United States consulate. A variety of Quakers, Unitarians, Anglicans, and members of groups such as Homes Not Bombs and the International Socialists came to mourn as well, and to call for nonviolence, peace, and social justice.
RCMP had informed the group they could stand in the first lane of University Avenue, but while demonstrators awaited the 1 o'clock officialstart time, the police told a group of some 10-12 people holding incendiary signs such as "War is not the Way: Nonviolence Now" and "There is no way to peace, peace is the way" that they had to move across the street. While most cops gave no reason, some stated that our presence was "not a good mix" with those laying flowers at the consulate in remembrance of the victims of the Tuesday terror attacks in the U.S.
Police, frustrated that citizens were exercising their democratic rights to stand silently on the sidewalk and plead for peace while their
government whips up the fervour for war, violently ripped the Homes not Bombs banner out of the hands of two individuals and took it across the street. Then, Laurel Smith, a member of Homes not Bombs who was holding a sign reading "Nonviolence Now," was bumped from behind by one police officer, so she sat down. When told to move, Laurel asked for one valid reason, which was not forthcoming. She was then roughly manhandled and dragged across the four lanes of traffic and thrown onto the concrete island dividing University Avenue. She is now nursing a large bruise on her right arm.
After everyone gathered on the island and set up banners and began leafletting, police again moved to clear the area, stating we should stand way across the street near the University Ave. courthouse. Again, a small group refused to move, as there was clearly no legal or safety reason to do so. We wondered whether we would be moved if we instead had held signs calling for the bombing of Afghanis.
Again, officers refused to provide a legitimate reason, and pushed people around. Smith, again holding her sign, had it violently ripped from her hands, at which point she again sat down.
Ironically, the police appeared to be acting, in their usual heavy handed fashion, against the wishes of many who had simply shown up at the consulate to express condolences, many of whom supported our plea for no escalation of the violence, no retaliatory strikes.
It is clear that the war atmosphere being whipped up by so-called political "leaders" is being reflected in a local level on the streets of our cities, as we saw in today's police actions and as we continue to see in the escalating racist attacks being carried out against Muslims, Hindus, anyone in this country who seems "suspect," just weeks after Canada proclaimed before the world that it was not a racist nation.

U.S. citizens “are alone in the developed world in not having universal access to health cares, its rates of child poverty, and economic inequality are amongst the highest in the OPECD,” he said. “This is not a society that we as Canadians should be in any rush to join.”

Help us stop massive clearcuts in Ontario’s public Forests   - Fri, 7 Sep.201
Late on the Friday of the Labour Day long weekend, The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) released a new draft of their clearcutting guideline which requires companies to create massive clearcuts in Ontario's public forests
An earlier draft of the guideline was released last fall and called for the use of 10,000 hectare clearcuts (larger than the City of Guelph). Rather than addressing the public outcry that resulted, the MNR has now removed any limit on the size of clearcut allowed. The new draft guideline would allow the vast majority of the area logged in a forestry plan area to be in massive clearcuts.
MNR says that big clearcuts will be good for wildlife because naturally occurring fires are also big. This simplistic and misguided concept is the cornerstone of the guideline, and puts at risk the remaining areas of large, continuous old forest in the province. Woodland caribou, a threatened species, is already locally extinct everywhere that industrial logging has occurred in Ontario. This guideline sets a dangerous precedent for forestry in Canada.
Although the guideline contains some progressive changes to how many trees should be left standing in clearcuts after logging to provide better wildlife habitat, these changes don't go far enough. Any positive changes the guideline proposes are swamped by its focus on massive clearcuts, whichill do significant harm to our forests.
We need your help to get the MNR to drop its plans to allow massive clearcuts. The Ontario government must be shown that we won't stand by and let them destroy our forests. Your comments to MNR are a key element in the fight to get this guideline changed and to stop this dangerous Canadian precedent.
Send your comments to Joe Churcher, Silviculture Systems Specialist MNR Forest Management Branch

McLabour: Big Mac backs Blair – Sept.2001
TONY BLAIR has triggered a potentially damaging row  over Labour's increasingly close links with big corporations after it emerged that he is to attend a  £15,000 reception at the party's annual conference paid for by the burger chain McDonald's.  It agreed to sponsor the food and drink for 450 guests at a high-profile event in Brighton to celebrate Labour's 100th conference only after receiving assurances that the prime minister would attend.
Hosted by the cabinet minister Charles Clarke, appointed party chairman by Blair after the election, the invitation-only soiree, on the eve of the leader's keynote speech, is one of the most controversial commercial "opportunities" offered by Millbank to raise upwards of £4 million during the week.
The US corporation, a target of anti-globalisation protesters who plan to demonstrate outside the conference when it opens on September 30, is anxious to receive the implied endorsement of Blair and other ministers.
Executives initially intended to finance a football stunt within the conference security complex, but switched when they found that Blair was unable to make the kickabout.
McDonald's said a director would "say a few words" at the reception. A corporate video crew is expected to film the gathering. The company also raised the  possibility of the prime minister wearing a McDonald's hat, according to a lobbyist with knowledge of the discussions, but Millbank ruled that out as unacceptable.
The arrangement prompted unease within the party.
Labour MP John McDonnell, a critic of transnational corporations such as McDonald's, said: "It turns my stomach, I don't know how low we can sink. It just shows how out of touch the Labour leadership is with the rank and file of the movement."
John Edmonds, the head of the GMB who fears unions are being sidelined in the party, said: "I hope this is not the first step towards renaming us the McLabour  party"

Beaches By-Election Report from PJ the Cat – Sept.5.2001

    In this issue
-NDP Candidate Michael Prue Stomped by Elephant
-Green Liberal Candidate Campaigns Door to Door by Car

    1. NDP Candidate Michael Prue Stomped by Elephant
Monday's Labour Day parade took on a strong Beaches by-election flavour with workers throughout the event sporting orange Michael Prue pocket stickers. Prue's supporters marched in the lead on a route lined by telephone polls pasted with OCAP Fight to Win Images … and to many people it must have looked like the Michael Prue Fight to Win march.
A key part of Prue's worker strategy was to avoid marching in the parade with the scrubbies. He stood at the review stand inside the Exhibition gates with Howie, Jack, Olivia and Joe.
Trouble began when air show jets began roaring over an Elephant ride across the road from the review stand. Worker chants and drums combined with the noise of the planes to spook the elephants. It got worse when a low flying formation caused one elephant to bolt. Knocking his trainer aside the beast crashed through the fence with three children on his back. He rushed through the crowd to the stand where Michael Prue was waving to the folks in local 313. Seizing Prue with his trunk the elephant slammed him down in front of horrified spectators, and stamped him with his right foot.
"It stamped on him so hard his eyes nearly popped out," said Councillor Joe Mihevc.
"We've given Prue a million dollars worth of free publicity," said a frustrated Howard Hampton. "Count on us having him back together and limping toward the finish line in this campaign."
    -------
    2. Green Liberal Candidate Campaigns Door to Door by Car
Beaches-East York liberal candidate Bob Hunter has a strong environmental background as a green reporter for City TV and Eye Magazine … and in this campaign he's caught many people by surprise by campaigning door to door by auto.
Led by a police escort Hunter is cruising neighbourhood streets in a refurbished '59 Corvette. Despite its powerful gasoline engine, the race car is also a mean green machine. Its development sponsored by the federal government, it features a hood ornament wind daisy that powers the onboard cigarette lighter.
We questioned Hunter on the curb at Maple Street. "The race car is a peacemaker," said Hunter. "I want people to know that you can love cars and be green, too. I've said as much before in my Eye column."
Asked about the police escort Hunter said, "The police have always done favours for City TV and that carries over to employees like me."
But some neighbours disagreed. "Those officers are getting out of the car and staring down people with NDP lawn signs," said local resident Marvin Wilson. "It's intimidation is what it is. Hunter will having us living in a green police state where cops drive race cars."

Sample article - New toilet emails medical info
The latest threat to Internet privacy may be soon be in your bathroom.
Several companies, including U.K.-based Twyford Bathroom, have developed computerized toilets that perform tests on human waste. In doing so, they can determine whether users have certain health problems, including pregnancy, low fiber diet, and various diseases. These toilets can then send this medical information over the Internet to a variety of recipients, such as supermarkets (should there be any nutritional deficiencies). As one bathroom expert quipped, "Why shouldn't toilets be linked to the Internet?"
These devices have drawn considerable alarm from many quarters as an apparent invasion of privacy. One leading gastroenterologist expressed fears that the high-technology toilets would "result in a lot of unnecessary further testing." It is also unclear whether the manufacturers have developed any specific systems or rules to prevent privacy abuses. However, for the time being, it may be some time before these digital bathroom appliances become widespread, mainly because they are still very expensive. Indeed, a single Twyford Bathroom VIP toilet costs a hefty US $5 000.

Kormos and Marchese Confront Human Rights Abuses
    Thu, 16 Aug 2001 16:23:31 -0400
COLOMBIA - New Democrat MPPs Peter Kormos and Rosario Marchese faced off with Colombian paramilitary forces Wednesday, learning first-hand about the constant threat of deadly violence confronting Colombian peace activists every day.
Kormos and Marchese, in the civil-war-torn country as part of a two-week, 30-person Canadian peace delegation, helped shield women attending a peace conference in the city of Barrancabermeja from potential paramilitary attacks.
The region is marked by assassinations and mass killings by the army and paramilitary forces. Already, five landmines have been found near the  conference. Despite the serious threat of violence, some 2,000 women from  all over Colombia attended the event.
"I'm moved by the courage and defiance of these women in the face of the paramilitaries and their aggression," Kormos said from Colombia. "I hope  our presence will help protect them from harm and lend them encouragement in their struggles for freedom and justice."
After the event, Kormos and Marchese took part in ceremonies marking mass killings, including a peaceful march through a paramilitary-occupied zone.
Marchese described the mood as one of hope, despite the civil war and the human rights threats constantly being faced by Colombian peace activists.
Marchese and Kormos are part of the Canada-Colombia Solidarity Campaign's Minga (Andean for "collective endeavour") For Life and Against Violence  delegation. The tour began Aug. 13 and continues to Aug. 28.
Thirty delegates from British Columbia to Newfoundland and representing labour, First Nations, African-Canadians, women, faith groups, academics, MPPs and social activists are now witnessing the impact of the country's deteriorating conflict and humanitarian crisis. The delegation, alongside leaders from Colombia's "Invisible Struggles" (Indigenous, Peasant, Afro-Colombian, labour and women's movements) will develop a strategy for long-term change.

MPP Says Oak Ridges Moraine Report a Sell-Out -August 14, 2001
    From:  Mike_Colle-MPP@ontla.ola.org
(Queen's Park) - MPP Mike Colle says recommendations released today by the Oak Ridges Moraine Advisory Panel are a disappointing sell-out that are a backward step for Moraine protection.
Says Colle, "This is a very disappointing, weak report that is very permissive of development on the Oak Ridges Moraine and not on the side of protection. Essentially, if this report is followed it will be a death of a thousand cuts for the Moraine."
    Among the most troubling recommendations:
    1.      Wildlife and natural corridor protection has been reduced from 34% recommended by the government at the OMB hearings to just 16%.
    2.      Millionaire estate lots will be permitted on nearly 40% of the Moraine deemed countryside/rural.
    3.      Aggregate extraction will be permitted in sensitive natural corridors.
Also troubling is the broken promise of public consultation. The government has refused full public meetings, cutting off important debate by opting for controlled so-called 'open-houses.'
There will be no public hearings or meaningful time set aside to really hear what the public thinks.
Colle is urging the public to not give up the fight despite this setback.
Adds Colle, "The government is afraid of real public consultation because they know people who want Moraine protection will reject this report. That is why they're cutting off debate. Nevertheless, they will be watching us to
see what we will accept. We can not give up the fight for a proper protection plan. We will not accept this disappointing sell-out."

    Consumer Power and Global Warming
Some hints for things to buy, do or boycott to cool the Earth by Ish Theilheimer
Many parts of Canada are now suffering through one of the driest, hottest summers ever. It looks like part of a scary pattern of global warming, with more smog alerts every year, more deaths from pollution, the Great Lakes drying, agriculture in peril and more. Somehow, the politicians and the all-powerful corporations don't seem to have the will to do what's needed to turn things around.
Most governments and politicians won't stand up to corporate power. But you  can. Like it or not, we can often have more influence as consumers than as  citizens. And environmentally concerned citizen-consumers are developing sophisticated ways to pressure corporations, as well as to vote against  global warming with their wallets or even at their electrical meters.

    Smog Death Alert – Aug.2.2001
It's raining a dry combination of particulate matter and live and dead bugs in Toronto.
As I stepped outside at 5 pm on lower Bathurst I encountered some of the dirtiest smoggy air ever. It was like breathing gasoline fumes straight … and not only that, clouds of what looked like aphids or tiny mosquitoes were sweeping over me, making it even harder to breath. On closer inspection it appeared to be dirt on my skin.
Stopping in the park I talked to a man as I tried to brush the stuff from my face. I said – This the last straw. It's a Smog/Death Alert. It's raining god damn dirt. We've got to get rid of Mike Harris before he kills us.
It's too late for that, and It's not dirt, he replied, his expression smug. Look closer my friend, those are dead bugs and they're in the air over at least the whole of downtown.
Traveling by roller blades for three kilometers, I hoped for an end to the filth. Instead I encountered people with their mouths covered, T-shirts turned into masks and so on. The only difference was that farther north the bugs were bigger and alive.
Next person I talked to was a friend on his bike. He's a hairy sort of guy, and bugs were swarmed all over him like something out of a horror movie.
So now I'm home and covered in tiny dead bugs. I could take a shower but since I'm leaving for a GM food demo, why bother. The filth is still out there.
I'll put on a breather mask, but we all really need body suits.
So is it out of control pollution or out of control genetic engineering?
    * It turns out the bugs were aphids, that flew up from trees, plants, grass - triggered by some sort of effect of climate change. They are not native but have swarmed in from China and destroyed most of the soybean crop.
